But what cures fast can also be a headache—once it's set in the wrong place or you need to rework a joint, removing it can be quite a challenge.

Method 1: UV Debonder / Un-Curing Agent (Most Recommended, Most Targeted)

Specialized UV glue removers are available on the market. They work by penetrating the cured adhesive layer, causing it to swell, soften, and eventually lose adhesion. Here's how:

  • Apply a few drops of the debonder onto the cured glue surface, or soak the bonded area if possible

  • Wait a few minutes to tens of minutes (depending on the thickness of the glue layer)

  • Once softened, wipe it off gently with a soft cloth or a plastic scraper

Best for: Almost all materials—glass, plastic, metal, circuit boards
Pros: Lowest risk of damaging the substrate
Caution: Formulations vary by brand; always test on a small, inconspicuous area first


Method 2: Heat Application (Physical Softening, Simple and Direct)

Cured UV glue is typically a thermosetting/thermoplastic hybrid—most types soften noticeably at 80°C~150°C. Heating reduces adhesion and makes the glue easier to peel off.

Common ways to apply heat:

  • Hair dryer (household) : Set to the hottest setting, blow directly on the glue for 2–3 minutes, then try prying with a plastic spudger

  • Heat gun: More efficient and hotter, but watch the distance and temperature to avoid scorching surrounding materials

  • Soldering iron: Glass only! Bring the tip close to (but not directly into) the glue layer for precise local heating—avoid on plastics

Best for: Heat-resistant materials like glass, ceramics, metals
Avoid on: PC plastic, acrylic, soft plastics, and other low-heat-tolerance materials (they may warp or turn cloudy)


Method 3: Acetone Wiping (Glass Specialist, Strong Cleaning Power)

Acetone is a powerful organic solvent that effectively dissolves most UV adhesives. Dip a cotton swab or soft cloth in a small amount of acetone and wipe repeatedly over the cured glue—the layer will gradually dissolve and come off.

  • Safe for: Regular glass, tempered glass, some metals

  • Not safe for: PC (polycarbonate), acrylic, ABS plastics, coated/painted surfaces (acetone will cause clouding or corrosion)

Safety note: Acetone is flammable and can be irritating. Always work in a well-ventilated area, keep away from open flames, and wear protective gloves.


Method 4: Alcohol Soaking/Wiping (Gentle, the First Thing to Try)

If you're unsure about your substrate's solvent resistance, start with alcohol (isopropyl or even 75% medical-grade ethanol works). While slower than acetone, it's relatively safe for most plastics, metals, and glass.

  • For small items, soak directly in alcohol for several hours or overnight

  • For larger items, apply alcohol-soaked wipes and cover with plastic wrap to prevent evaporation, replenishing every half hour

Pros: Gentle, easily available, low-risk
Cons: Limited effect on fully cured thick layers—requires patience


Method 5: Physical Scraping (Quick and Dirty, Best for Thin Layers)

If the UV glue coating is thin or has poor adhesion to begin with (e.g., on smooth glass), you can carefully scrape it off with a razor blade, craft knife, or scraper.

  • Keep the blade as flat as possible to avoid scratching the substrate

  • Clean off any remaining residue with alcohol or acetone afterward

Best for: Glass tabletops, screen edge residue
Avoid on: Soft plastics, polished metal surfaces (prone to scratching)


Method 6: Long-Term Water Soaking (Passive but Effective)

Many people don't realize that UV glue's water resistance isn't as "bulletproof" as advertised. Prolonged soaking in warm water allows moisture to slowly penetrate the interface between the adhesive and the substrate, gradually weakening the bond.

  • Warm water at 40°C–60°C works better

  • Soaking time: several hours to a day or two

  • Pairing with an ultrasonic cleaner improves results

Method 7: Boiling Water / Steam (Enhanced Water Attack)

A step up from soaking—boil the item in water for 5–15 minutes (make sure the substrate can handle the heat). The combination of high temperature and moisture softens the UV glue quickly, often causing it to peel off in one piece.

  • Not for: Electronic components, wood, plastics
