Customized Dual-Component MMA Acrylic Adhesive Filling System for European Customer

Project Overview

This project was developed for a European customer requiring a customized filling solution for two-component MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) acrylic adhesive. Due to the special characteristics of MMA adhesive, including high viscosity, corrosiveness, and sensitivity to air bubbles, the customer needed a filling system capable of handling multiple package sizes while minimizing equipment footprint and preventing material contamination.

After detailed technical discussions, we designed and delivered a multi-purpose AB dual-component filling, capping, degassing solution that allows the customer to process different material packaging configurations on a single machine.

The final system was successfully tested with MMA adhesive and has been proven stable in production applications, with similar machines already operating normally in the EUR And US market.

Customer Requirements

The customer’s main requirements included:

1. Dual-component filling ratio: 10:1

The adhesive consists of:

• Component A

• Component B

with a fixed mixing ratio:

A : B = 10 : 1

Because of this ratio, the consumption difference between the two components is significant. A standard configuration using the same barrel size for both materials would result in inefficient material usage.

For example:

• 1 barrel of Component A requires approximately 10 barrels of Component B

Therefore, the customer required a more flexible material supply solution.

2. Multiple packaging sizes

The customer required one machine to support three different cartridge sizes:

• 50ML cartridge

• 250ML cartridge

• 490ML cartridge

The system needed to achieve:

• Filling

• Cartridge positioning

• Plug pressing / capping

for all three packaging formats.

3. Limited production space

The customer had limited factory space and could not install separate filling machines for each MMA adhesive type.

The solution needed to:

• Reduce equipment footprint

• Avoid cross-contamination between different adhesives

• Allow quick material changeover

4. European barrel compatibility

During communication, the customer explained that their raw materials were supplied in:

• 55 gallon drums

• 5 gallon drums

Unlike the common domestic packaging:

• 20L plastic straight barrels

• 200L galvanized straight barrels

  
  

European customers commonly use:

• 55 gallon drums

• 5 gallon pails

Therefore, the feeding system needed to be redesigned according to European barrel standards.

Customized Solution Design

1. Flexible Dual-Layer Platen Feeding System

Initially, the machine was designed with a standard platen feeding system.

However, considering the customer’s 10:1 mixing ratio and different barrel combinations, we developed a customized:

Double-Layer Press Plate System

The design includes:

• Large platen for 55 gallon drums

• Additional small platen installed on the large platen for 5 gallon pails

This allows multiple feeding configurations:

This greatly improves material utilization and reduces unnecessary replacement of raw material containers.

2. Single Machine with Quick-Change Material System

Because the customer processes different MMA adhesive materials, using dedicated machines for each material would increase:

• Equipment investment

• Floor space

• Maintenance cost

To solve this problem, we designed a quick-change structure.

When changing adhesive types, only the material-contact components need replacement:

• Platen

• Metering pump

• Feed tube

• Valve

(spare parts package)

This solution:

✔ Prevents adhesive contamination
✔ Reduces cleaning time
✔ Saves equipment cost
✔ Maximizes production flexibility

3. Corrosion-Resistant Material Selection

MMA acrylic adhesive has corrosive characteristics.

Therefore, all parts contacting the adhesive were customized with:

SUS316 Stainless Steel

Including:

• Material pipes

• Valves

• Filling components

• Cartridge lifting fixtures

For the metering pump sealing system:

PTFE (Teflon) seals were selected

Benefits:

• Excellent chemical resistance

• Longer service life

• Better compatibility with MMA materials

4. Lightweight Double-Layer Platen Design

Because a full stainless-steel double-layer platen would create excessive weight and affect operation stability, we selected:

Aviation-Grade Aluminum Alloy

for the platen structure.

Advantages:

• High strength

• Lightweight design

• Easy operation

• Reduced mechanical load

The final:

Filling System Design

Multi-Size Filling and Capping Solution

Since the customer required:

• 50ML

• 250ML

• 490ML

cartridge formats,

we designed a shared filling system.

The machine uses:

One Common Metering Pump System

while allowing replacement of:

• Filling fixture

• Cartridge lifting fixture

for different cartridge sizes.

Customized Capping Fixtures

Because different cartridge sizes have different:

• Cartridge dimensions

• Cap center distances

we provided:

Three Sets of Pressing Fixtures

for:

1. 50ML cartridge

2. 250ML cartridge

3. 490ML cartridge

All replacement fixtures are manufactured from:

SUS316 stainless steel

ensuring:

• Corrosion resistance

• Long service life

• Stable positioning accuracy

Working Principle

The AB dual-component filling machine works as follows:

1. MMA adhesive materials are loaded into Component A and Component B barrels.

2. The platen system applies controlled pressure to push the high-viscosity adhesive toward the feeding system.

3. Servo-driven motors and precision metering pumps control:

• Material delivery

• Filling quantity

• Mixing ratio accuracy

4. The filling system works together with automatic cartridge positioning fixtures.

5. Adhesive is accurately filled into:

• 50ML

• 250ML

• 490ML

cartridges.

6. The pressing system automatically installs cartridge plugs/caps.

Anti-Drip Filling Technology

The machine is equipped with:

One Set of Double-Acting Retractable Filling Valve

The filling head features:

• Separate A/B material channels

• Multi-layer sealing structure

• Vacuum suction-back function

After filling stops:

• Remaining adhesive is pulled back

• Material dripping is minimized

• Stringing effect is reduced

This design is especially suitable for:

• High-viscosity MMA adhesive

• Long-term continuous production

(For extremely high-viscosity adhesives, slight stringing may still naturally occur due to material characteristics.)

Bubble Removal Solution

Customized Centrifugal Degassing System

During testing and communication, the customer mentioned that hidden air bubbles could exist inside the raw material barrels.

These bubbles may affect:

• Filling accuracy

• Product appearance

• Adhesive performance

Therefore, we additionally designed a customized:

MMA Adhesive Degassing Centrifuge

The centrifuge helps:

• Remove invisible air bubbles

• Improve filling stability

• Reduce post-filling defoaming requirements

• Enhance final product quality

Additional Automation Solution

To complete the production line, we also supplied:

Automatic Labeling Machine

The labeling system provides:

• Accurate label positioning

• Stable operation

• Compatibility with cartridge packaging

Together with the filling machine and degassing system, it forms a complete MMA adhesive packaging solution.
